Protective helmets were really used until 1941 when the Dodger's General Manager Larry MacPhail made it mandatory for his team, after Pee Wee Reese and Joe Medwick sustained serious injuries from being hit with pitches. Some time in the 1950s Branch Rickey introduced the forerunner to the current design and helmets became mandatory throughout the league in 1956. Ear coverage extensions were a requirement starting in 1983.
