The practice has an interesting history, and each university has a unique sticker system. So, the answer to a crucial question—“What do the stickers mean on college football helmets?”—is different for every school. And, not all NCAA football teams use them.

Let’s break down the history of college football helmet stickers, describe a few different kinds and explore six schools’ sticker strategies.

What Are the Stickers on College Football Helmets?

Why do college football players have stickers on their helmets? They’re a reward for excellent plays, team wins or individual accomplishments on the field. Earning and displaying a helmet sticker is a rite of passage for players, and the practice can motivate them to improve.

The practice began in 1968 when a long-time Ohio State trainer suggested the idea to then-head coach Woody Hayes, who adopted the buckeye sticker reward system.

Many universities followed suit, offering players rewards for accomplishments that weren’t included in statistics or would otherwise go unnoticed.

You may not think of stickers as a powerful motivation tool for adults, but a 2011 study determined otherwise. When male study participants were offered a tangible, visible “trophy” for an accomplishment, they adjusted their approaches, sacrificing their individual best interests for team success more frequently.

Types of Stickers

So, why are stickers awarded? The answer depends upon the university, but stickers can honor the following types of accomplishments:

• Three-and-outs
• Yardage gains
• Touchdown runs
• Game wins
• Victories against rival teams

But, some schools—like the University of Georgia—don’t have a scientific system, awarding stickers when they feel players have earned them.

While some schools only offer one type of sticker, some offer a few different varieties. Brigham Young, for instance, used to award gold stickers for individual accomplishments and blue stickers for whole-team merits. Their sticker system has been discontinued and reinstituted many times throughout history.

College Teams that Use Stickers

We’ve explored what the stickers on college football helmets mean—let’s break down a few specific examples in more detail.

Ohio State University

Any list of college football teams using a sticker system would be incomplete without Ohio State University.

College football history aficionados generally believe that Ohio introduced the practice. But there is a faction that attributes stickering to Dewey King of Rutgers University in 1960, who awarded stickers for interceptions.

In the present, Ohio’s stickering system remains mostly mysterious for outsiders, but two accomplishments are known to be sticker-worthy:

1. The defense accumulating at least five three-and-outs
2. The offense gaining twelve or more yards in at least ten plays

Ohio State buckeye leaf stickers are easily recognizable, featuring the highly toxic fruit of Ohio’s state tree standing out against a stark white background.

University of Georgia

The University of Georgia Bulldogs began awarding stickers as far back as 1971, but the program was quickly discontinued a few seasons later. However, the stickers reemerged in 2001 under head coach Mark Richt.

Georgia players can earn one of two types of stickers:

• Black bone stickers signify a win in the classroom—a B or higher on a project or exam
• White bone stickers are awarded for individual or team accomplishments on the field

According to former Dawgs linebacker Christian Robinson, players can earn white bones for:

• Critical third downs
• Pressures
• Sacks
• Interceptions
• Tackles for loss

But, once you earn a bone, keeping it isn’t a guarantee—coaches can award bones and repossess them as punishment for mistakes on the field.

Stanford University

Stanford University’s axe stickers are steeped in symbolism and history. Roll the highlight reel:

• The first football game against Stanford’s rival UC Berkeley took place in 1892 and has continued annually ever since (except for breaks during wartime).

• Stanford fans premiered the Axe Yell chant in 1896, but fans of both teams adopted it during games.

• In 1899, students introduced a prop—a woodcutter’s axe. After it was stolen by Cal students only two days following its debut, a heroic recovery by Stanford students in 1930 inevitably led to a ceasefire.

• In 1933, the Axe became the trophy awarded to the winner of the Big Game each year, a tradition that continues to this day.

While coaches reward players with axe stickers if they defeat UC Berkeley at the Big Game, they also present stickers throughout the season for merits on the field.

Clemson University

Clemson University’s iconic paw print logo wasn’t introduced until 1970. And before its introduction, football coaching staff awarded players skull and crossbones stickers to recognize excellent play.

But, in an effort to integrate the school’s new logo, the football team adopted the paw print for its stickering system, which continues to this day.

Clemson’s sticker system, like Ohio State’s, is mostly confidential—fans generally aren’t sure which accomplishments merit recognition. Clemson head coaches have awarded them with varying frequency throughout the school’s history.

University of Michigan

During his first season as head coach of the Wolverines in 2015, Jim Harbaugh introduced helmet stickers. The decals featured a wolverine in blue, and coaching staff awarded them for numerous in-game achievements.

But, in 2021, Michigan introduced a new slate of helmet stickers, awarded to players for:

• Overall game wins
• Wins in rivalry games
• Academic honors
• All-Big Ten honors

Captains will wear a sticker bearing a C.

At the beginning of the 2021 season, every player received a sticker featuring the area code where they’re from. According to coaching staff, the expanded sticker system was introduced to offer more recognition to players for individual performance.

Florida State University

Florida State University awards football players tomahawk stickers for both athletic and academic achievements.

But, like the University of Georgia, earning a sticker doesn’t guarantee you’ll get to keep it. Stickers can be revoked for mistakes on and off the field.

They’re not awarded at every game, either. For example, at the beginning of the 2020 season, Seminoles coach Mike Norvell didn’t award any stickers to players until they secured their first win of the season.

Since FSU’s minimalist helmet design offers ample free space, players are free to put their tomahawks wherever they please. They’re not restricted to only the back or the top of their helmets, unlike other teams.

Four independent grading organizations currently rule the world of sports card trading:

• Beckett Grading Services (BGS)

Each entity assesses the quality of cards on a scale from 1 to 10—the higher the number, the better the condition of the card.

In addition, manufacturers print sports cards in a set. Sets can feature anywhere from one to hundreds of cards, and a specific card’s number in the set is denoted by “#X” or “#X/X.”

#1 Patrick Mahomes 2017 National Treasures NFL Shield Autographed Rookie Card #161

Topping the list is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, photographed on the 2017 National Treasures NFL Shield Rookie Card that secured $4,300,000 on PWCC Marketplace—a record-breaking private sale that stunned card collectors in July of 2021.

The card scores an impressive 8.5 per BSG’s condition rating system, and it features the signature NFL shield logo patch and Mahomes’s signature. During his first season as starting quarterback in 2018, he became the only person in history to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a single season in both the NFL and college football.

In the 2019-2020 playoff season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl for the first time in fifty years, where they bested the San Francisco 49ers and Mahomes secured the Super Bowl MVP title.

Considered by many modern football fans to be the “Greatest of All Time,” Tom Brady has enjoyed a long and storied career in the NFL. Playing for the New England Patriots from his rookie season to 2019, Brady ushered the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles (more than any other player).

As one of hundreds of its kind, the card isn’t particularly rare—but Herbert's success as a rookie rendered his 2020 cards high-value items for traders.

#11 Jim Brown 1958 Topps Rookie Card #62

Jim Brown was a decorated NFL player during his eight-season run as fullback for the Cleveland Browns. A 1957 first-round draft pick, he collected various accolades on the field, including:

#14 Bart Starr 1957 Topps Rookie Card #119

Kyler Murray is a rising star in professional sports following a decorated career in college football, college baseball and New England collegiate summer baseball.

After winning the 2018 Heisman Trophy as a junior at Oklahoma, Murray opted out of his senior year to join the Arizona Cardinals as a first-overall 2019 NFL draft pick. In the 2018 MLB draft, he was selected ninth overall by the Oakland As, making him the first player in NFL history to be drafted in the first round of both the MLB and the NFL.

The $6,606,296 sale is particularly notable due to the grade of the card—only scoring a 3 out of 10 on SGC’s grading scale.

The relatively low grade of the T206 makes its value particularly impressive.

#2 Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps

Switch hitter Mickey Mantle graced the lineup of the New York Yankees between 1951 and 1968, playing center field for only one team throughout the duration of his career.

Topps remains one of the few exclusive manufacturers producing sports cards—they have an exclusive licensing agreement with the MLB to continue making and selling sports cards.

#3 LeBron James 2003-2004 Rookie Patch Autograph #07/23

LeBron James began his NBA career as a small forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After emerging as a heavy hitter in the league, he joined the Miami Heat between 2010 and 2014, returning to the Cavs between 2014 and 2018 and transferring to the LA Lakers in 2018, where he still plays.

As a four-time NBA champion, eighteen-time NBA All-Star and thirteen-time NBA First Team player, James’s 2003 rookie card holds particular value in the sports card community. James cards currently hold numerous positions on the list of most expensive sports cards ever sold.

#4 Luka Dončić 1:1 Logoman Autographed

Slovenian NBA player Luka Dončić rose to prominence while playing in various European basketball leagues before joining the Atlanta Hawks as a first-round draft pick in 2018. After a first-season transfer to the Dallas Mavericks, Dončić has remained with the team ever since.

Dončić is one of the few players in the league to secure three All-NBA First Team recognitions so early in his career, joining the ranks of Larry Bird and Tim Duncan.

#5 Patrick Mahomes 2017 Rookie Autographed BGS 8.5

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II’s rookie card secured a $4.3 million sale. The 2017 first-round draft pick remains the only quarterback in history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a single season.

The card’s quality—an 8.5 on BGS’s ten-point grading scale—is particularly notable, and the Mahomes card is currently the most expensive NFL card ever sold.

#6 Babe Ruth 1933 Goudey #53 PSA 9

Babe Ruth’s 1933 Goudey card is the third-most expensive sports card ever sold bearing an inactive player.

The 1933 card depicts the MLB titan in his second-to-last season as a player before his retirement from the sport in 1935. The outfielder/pitcher made his league debut on the Boston Red Sox before spending the majority of his career on the New York Yankees’ lineup.

#7 Mike Trout 2009 Superfractor Autograph

Mike Trout, centerfielder, has played for the LA Angels MLB team since 2011. The team selected him in the 2009 MLB draft, but he didn’t join the team as a starting player until 2012—he received a unanimous nomination as the American League MVP in the same year.

The 2009 card is particularly valuable because it depicts Trout before his official start on the Angels and before his MVP award. Since 2012, he has been named an MLB All-Star ten times, American League MVP three times and All-MLB First-Team player twice.

#8 Honus Wagner T206 PSA 2

Another Honus Wagner T206 baseball card maintains a top-ten spot in the most expensive sports cards ever sold.

The T206 set was issued between 1909 and 1911 and was included in packs of cigarettes and loose tobacco. The set is of particular importance for MLB card collectors due to its rarity and the high quality of its color depictions of players.

#9 Wayne Gretzky 1989 O-Pee-Chee

“The Great One” enjoyed a 20-season career as an NHL player, and has been called the greatest hockey player of all time even by the NHL itself.

The Canadian-born player graced cards produced by Canadian candy company O-Pee-Chee numerous times, but the 1989 iteration remains the most expensive NHL card ever sold and the ninth-most expensive sports card ever purchased for any sport.

#10 Honus Wagner T206 PSA 3

The third Honus Wagner T206 card to grace the top ten most expensive sports cards ever sold, the PSA 3 card sold for $3.25 million in a private sale in 2020.

Like the other T206 cards bearing Wagner’s visage, it features a relatively low grade. But its rarity and high image quality still renders it a high-value memorabilia piece.

#11 Honus Wagner T206 PSA 5

The PSA 3 Wagner only eclipsed the PSA 5 card in 2020—the latter was sold for $3.12 million in 2016, but it would likely fetch a significantly higher sale price if it hit the market today.

The highest-grade Wagner T206 card is among the top 25 most expensive sports cards ever sold, its condition makes it a particularly valuable item. While it’s nowhere near mint condition, collectors should expect the card to fetch another record-breaking price the next time it’s purchased.

#12 Tom Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket #144/100 BGS 9

The second-most expensive NFL card ever sold after the Mahomes rookie card, this high-grade Tom Brady card fetched a $3.1 million sale price.

Notably, the card also represents a current NFL player. Both Mahomes and Brady are Super Bowl champions, but Brady has been called by many as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

#13 Michael Jordan Upper Deck Game Jersey Autographs

In October of 2021, one of just 23 Upper Deck game jersey autograph cards sold for $2.7 million in a private sale, making it the most expensive Jordan item ever sold in the sports cards sphere.

Only the sixth in a 23-card printing, its low serial number and BGS grade 8 rating render it a high-ticket memorabilia piece.

#14 LeBron James 2003-2004 Rookie Patch Autograph #23/23

The fourteenth-most expensive sports card ever purchased is another iteration of the LeBron James 2003-2004 rookie card.

Numerous LeBron James rookie cards have graced the collectibles market, but this card is of particular importance because of its serial number. While the card in the #3 spot is the 7th card printed in a 23-card run, this one is the last.

#15 Tom Brady Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket Autograph

Only two spots underneath a similar card, another Tom Brady Playoff Contenders Championship card holds a place in the top 20 most expensive sports cards.

However, this card was sold for $2.3 million the last time it was available on the market, while its higher-valued companion fetched $3.1 million.

#16 Kobe Bryant Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems – Green

The fourth-most expensive NBA card ever sold, the Kobe Bryant Metal Universe card was purchased for $2 million. The card depicts one of basketball’s most famous players during the 1997-1998 season, his second in the league.

Bryant entered the NBA as a first-round draft pick for the Charlotte Hornets in 1996. After being traded to the LA Lakers in the same year, he remained with the team until his retirement in 2016.

#17 LeBron James 2003 Exquisite Collection #78/99 BGS 9

Another LeBron James rookie card, the exquisite Collection iteration fetched $2 million at auction.

The card features an impressively high BGS grade of 9, only two scores beneath BGS’s flawless ranking. Due to its quality, collectors should expect the card to sell for an even higher price the next time it’s sold.

#18 Giannis Antetokounmpo Panini National Treasures Logoman Patch Autograph

The eighteenth-most expensive sports card ever sold depicts Giannis Antetokounmpo, Greek-Nigerian power forward for the Milwaukee Bucks.

What is Fantasy Football?

Fantasy football is a game that allows you to be the owner of your own NFL team. Your team will compete against other teams in your fantasy league, and you’ll score points depending on how well your players do in real NFL football games. The rules are simple, but you can make it as easy or as complex as you want – it’s up to you how seriously you want to take it.

You’ll draft a team made up of a pool of available NFL players to get started. Typically, you’ll pick a quarterback, running backs, wide receivers, a tight end, a kicker, a defense player and a FLEX (we’ll go over these in detail below). Then, as your players compete in their real NFL games, you’ll rack up points depending on how well they do. The better they do, the more points your fantasy team gets.

You’ll compete head-to-head with another team from your fantasy league each week. If your team has the most points by the end of the week, you win the matchup. Your team’s standing is calculated like a traditional sports league competing to reach the playoffs. Upon reaching the playoffs, you’ll compete with other teams in a tournament format to determine the fantasy league winner.

Fantasy football usually takes place during the first 13 to 14 weeks of the 16-game NFL season, with fantasy playoffs occurring between weeks 14 and 16.

Terms and Definitions to Know

Quarterback (QB)

Your fantasy football team will require one quarterback.

The quarterback runs each play on the field, so choosing one you trust will do well throughout the NFL season is essential. The quarterback is the most important player on offense. They start with the ball, and the way the play folds is up to their discretion.

Running Backs (RB)

As there’s usually one or two RB's on the field, your fantasy team will require two running backs.

The running back lines up behind the quarterback, and the quarterback either hands or throws the ball to them. They have to avoid being tackled and advance the ball across the field as far as possible.

Wide Receivers (WR)

There can be up to three wide receivers on an NFL field at one time, but your fantasy team only requires two wide receivers.

Their primary goal is to catch the ball when the quarterback throws it and occasionally run it.

Tight End (TE)

You will pick one tight end for your fantasy football team.

The tight end must act as both a receiver and a blocker. Their job changes depending on the play, so they have to be well-rounded to support a good play.

Kicker (K)

There is one kicker per fantasy football team.

The kicker’s goal is twofold: kick the ball to the other team and kick field goals. They typically only come on the field a couple of times per game, so they have to make it count when their time comes.

Defense and Special Teams(D/ST)

You’ll choose your team’s entire defensive line for your fantasy football team.

Fantasy points for defense can get tricky because they’re not scoring goals on the field, so fantasy teams typically lump the defense into one role. The defense must prevent the other team from progressing across the field and, ultimately, from scoring goals.

FLEX

FLEX players are unique to the fantasy football league. Although there is only one FLEX player on Fantasy teams, this position holds varying positions. This allows you to start an additional player on your fantasy roster. The most common type of FLEX players are wide receivers and running backs.

How long does a fantasy football draft take?

You’ll get anywhere from 60 seconds to two and a half minutes to make your draft selection. The entire draft can take anywhere from two to three hours.

How many rounds are in a fantasy football draft?

In an average fantasy football draft, you can expect up to sixteen rounds. It's up to the individual team manager to chose who they want to pick in the round.

Does overtime count in fantasy football?

Most fantasy football apps count overtime statistics – however, some do not count overtime as a part of the overall score for the week. Whether or not overtime counts depends on the platform you’re using to play fantasy football.

How many players are on a fantasy football team?

Standard fantasy football leagues allow up to 16 players: nine of which are used as starters each week, and seven are left on the bench. The score accumulated by the seven players left on the bench will not add to your overall score for the week.

What does RZ mean in fantasy football?

“RZ” means that your player’s team is in the “red zone” – in other words, they’re inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. This can be found in a Game Center or Stat Tracker as you watch your matchups online.

What is IDP in fantasy football?

“IDP” is short for “individual defensive players.” With this game format, you start specific defensive players instead of an entire defense team.

The waiver wire (or waivers) is the list of football players who are locked from being added to teams for a period to give all teams in the league a fair chance to add them. What is a “bye week”?

Acrylic, which is also known as plexiglass, is a type of plastic that is flexible and shatter-resistant. It might not be able to completely replicate the crystalline look of glass, but it is much more durable. However, acrylic is much easier to scratch than glass, so you must use care when deciding which cleaning supplies to use.

How To Clean An Acrylic Display Case

Below we will go through which types of cleaning supplies and agents you should (and shouldn’t) use to keep your acrylic case looking like new.

Use Gentle Cleaning Materials

A microfiber cleaning cloth is the best option for cleaning acrylic because it is non-abrasive and won’t leave behind lint or other particles. If you don’t have a microfiber cloth handy, a 100% cotton soft cloth will do in a pinch.

As for cleaning products, you should either use a cleaner that is specifically designed to clean acrylic, or mild dish soap and water. Anything else would likely be too abrasive and cause scratches.

Novus Plastic polish is widely recognized as one of the best cleaning agents for acrylic. They offer products that not only clean but buff and shine as well.

Avoid Harsh or Abrasive Chemicals and Tools

As mentioned above, you only want to use a microfiber or 100% cotton cloth to clean acrylic. A cotton blend or any cloth containing rayon or polyester is likely to leave scratches. Dishcloths or bathroom towels are too abrasive, and paper towels and newspaper contain wood pulp that gets left behind.

Moreover, you want to avoid any cleaner that has ammonia in it. Glass cleaner, Windex, vinegar or any vinegar-based products will permanently damage your acrylic due to their acidic nature.

Cleaning Your Acrylic Display Case

Here are a few tips for cleaning your acrylic case:

• Use a fresh microfiber cloth if possible. If you can’t, designate a cloth specifically for cleaning your cases. Using other cleaning cloths might transfer residual dirt and abrasive cleaners that can cause scratches.
• If your case is exceptionally dusty, you can spray the cleaning agent directly on the case. If you are spot cleaning, spray your cleaner on a clean microfiber cloth.
• Use long continuous strokes when cleaning. Don’t go over the same spot twice unless you use a clean section of cloth. Don’t press too hard because residual dirt on the cloth can cause scratches.

Clean Wood and Plastic Trim

Some acrylic cases have wood or plastic trim that will also need to be cleaned as regularly as you clean the acrylic. For plastic, apply the same techniques as for acrylic, to prevent visible scratches. For wood, scratches aren't as visible, so you can use any wood-safe cleaner. To clean up fingerprints or smudges, use warm water and a microfiber cloth. If you want to restore shine, use a wood polishing oil.

How to Remove Scratches From Acrylic

If your acrylic case gets scratched, it is possible that you can fix it yourself if the scratch isn’t too deep. You can use sandpaper to buff out the scratch, and an acrylic polish to restore the shine. A&C Plastics offers a detailed tutorial on the process.

If a scratch is deep enough that your fingernail gets caught in it when gliding along the surface, you either need specialized tools to fix it, or you need to go to a professional.

To get the most out of your purchase, you must install the case properly. This step-by-step guide will walk you through how to hang a display case safely and securely on your wall.

You Will Need the Following Tools

To properly mount your display case have these tools at hand:

• A level
• A tape measure
• A power drill
• Wall anchors
• Screws sized to your chosen wall anchors
• Your new display case!
• Stud Finder (optional)
• Hammer (optional)
• Nails (optional)

How to Mount a Display Case

Each Collectible Supplies display case comes ready to hang; all you need to do is mount the case to your wall. Follow this quick and easy step-by-step guide to discover the most secure and stable installation options for your wall-mountable display case.

Step 1: Choose your mounting location

First, you’ll need to choose a mounting location. Find a spot on your wall that is strong enough to support the weight of your display case and that is also aesthetically pleasing. It's also important to avoid hanging the case too close to any heat sources, as this could damage or warp the materials.

The most secure option is to mount directly to a stud. The usual space between studs is 16 inches, center to center. To make sure, use your stud finder and determine if mounting to a stud is an option. If your ideal location doesn’t have any appropriately placed studs, you’ll need to opt for anchors and drywall.

Once you've found the perfect spot, it’s time to start measuring.

Step 2: Measure the Width of the Display Case

The first step is to determine how wide your display case is. You will use this measurement to mark where you'll need to drill holes in the wall for the screws. Alternatively, if you’re mounting to a stud, the measurements will mark where you will need to hammer the nails.

Most display cases are between 24 and 36 inches wide. Once you know the width of your display case, use a tape measure to mark out an area on the wall that's equal to the width of the case. For example, if your display case is 30 inches wide, use the tape measure to mark a 30-inch wide area on the wall.

This practice is also great for visualizing the height and overall placement of the case.

Step 3: Drill Holes in the Wall

Once you've marked out an area on the wall for your display case, it's time to drill holes for the screws. Using a drill, create holes in the wall that align with the mounting hardware on the case. These holes should be big enough to fit your wall anchors. If you're not sure what size hole to drill, consult the instructions that came with your anchors.

Step 4: Insert Wall Anchors

With your drill still handy, it's time to insert your wall anchors into the drilled holes. Wall anchors provide extra support and stability while also distributing the weight of your display case more evenly across the drywall.

To insert an anchor, simply thread it into the hole you've drilled and then use your drill or a screwdriver to tighten it in place. Again, if you’re in doubt, consult the instructions that came with your particular anchors to determine how far down to insert them into the holes.

Step 5: Hang Your Display Case

Now, it's finally time to hang your display case! Start by holding the case up to the wall so that the holes you drilled in Step Three line up with the mounting hardware on the back of the case.

Finally, hang the case as you would a large picture frame. And that's it — you're done!

If you’re new to collecting cards, you might be overwhelmed at all the different types of sleeves, and you’re probably wondering why you even need to store your cards in a certain way. In this post, we will go through the different protection and storage options and the benefits of each.

The Best Way to Protect Trading Cards

The easiest and least expensive way to protect your card collection is with card sleeves. These come in a few different styles and thickness options — which one you choose will depend on whether you plan to handle the cards regularly, display them, store them long-term or sell them.

The value of your card is directly connected to its condition, and the smallest stain or tear can reduce that value by tens, or even hundreds of dollars.

Standard Card Sleeves

Often called soft sleeves or penny sleeves (because of their low price point), standard card sleeves are the base layer of protection for your cards. They will mainly protect against stains and the natural oils in your hands when you handle them.

As a side note, you will want to make sure any sleeves you buy are labeled acid-free, because prolonged exposure to acid will eventually cause the picture to yellow and harden.

Premium Card Sleeves

Premium sleeves are made out of a thicker plastic and offer better protection against bending, folding or edge damage, which would significantly decrease the value of any expensive cards.

They are ideal if you are going to be handling your cards frequently, such as when playing a game like Magic the Gathering or Pokemon, or if you trade your sports cards regularly with other collectors. Below are some different premium sleeve options.

Top Loaders

Top loaders are most commonly used with graded cards. Card grading is an extensive process that involves sending select cards to a company that evaluates their condition and “grades” them by suggesting a certain value. This process lends authenticity to your cards and helps you sell them more easily.

Top loaders are made with a stiff plastic and offer the most protection against folding or bending. However, because top loaders are usually larger than the card, there is a possibility of damage if the card is frequently moved or jostled (for example if it is transported by mail).

Semi-Rigid

Semi-rigid sleeves provide a tighter fit than a toploader, but as the name suggests, they are not as rigid. They provide better edge and corner protection which is necessary for gameplay that involves shuffling and dealing the cards.

Tall Sleeves

Some vintage sports cards from the 1970s were made in a taller size, and up until recently, collectors didn’t have a specific sleeve to protect them. A common solution was to put one regular size sleeve on each end of the card, but now most companies provide an appropriately sized sleeve.

Screw-Down Card Holders

To keep your cards pristine, you can opt for yet another form of card preservation. Screwdown card holders put your rare and high-value cards between two plates of acrylic, then, all four corners are screwed into place.

You’ll want to be very careful when choosing the right screwdown holder. Recessed screwdown card holders are often preferred because there is a card-shaped indentation where you card can safely sit — this protects the edges from being pinched down and compressed by the acrylic.

If you flatten the edges by storing your card in a non-recessed card holder, you won’t be able to submit it for grading. If you don’t plan to grade your card, you can easily opt for a flat or non-recessed holder.

The Best Way to Store Trading Cards

There are a couple of options when it comes to storing trading cards and your choices depend on the amount of storage space you have available and how accessible you’d like your cards.

Note that you should never put unsleeved cards into a box or a binder, because you risk damaging the corners or scratching the artwork. Remember, your cards are like vampires; they should be kept in a cool, dry place, and whatever you do, keep them out of direct sunlight.

Storage Boxes

Storage boxes are the cheaper way to store your collection, and one box can hold more cards than one binder, unless you are storing cards in thick top loader sleeves. Boxes, however, take up more space in your home and can be more cumbersome to rifle through.

Binders

Binders are a little more expensive than boxes, but they are more compact to store and can be placed on a bookshelf so you can have your favorite cards at your fingertips. They are also better for seeing what’s in your collection at a glance, since each page holds multiple cards.
